Special Needs Dentistry

Care planned around your child’s needs.

Our special needs dentistry in San Antonio is built around children with autism, sensory processing differences, developmental delays, and medical conditions, and around the parents who know them best. Pediatric dentists complete at least two years of specialty residency after dental school, and caring for children with special healthcare needs is part of that training.

Care that fits your child

We start by listening. Before or during your first visit, tell us what helps and what doesn’t:

  • Routines your child relies on
  • Comfort items, favorite shows, or rewards that work
  • Words, sounds, or kinds of touch to avoid
  • How your child communicates, and what signals mean “I need a break”
  • Medical history, medications, and any specialists involved in their care

We use what you share to plan the visit. We can schedule extra time, slow down, and take breaks whenever your child needs them. Some children do best with a quick look at the teeth on the first day and a cleaning another time; that’s fine with us.

Getting familiar before the first checkup

A new place, new people, and new sounds can be a lot for some children. Short practice visits let your child see the office and meet our team without any pressure to sit in the dental chair.

At our Dominion Crossing office, the Toothseum is especially helpful for this. It’s a play-and-learn space just off the waiting room, and easy repeat visits there can help children, including many children with autism, get to know the sights and sounds of a dental visit before their first exam. If get-to-know-us visits sound right for your child, let our team know when you call.

Prevention matters even more

Some children have a higher risk of cavities because of medications, diet needs, low muscle tone, or difficulty with brushing. Staying ahead of problems means fewer treatments later. We fit home-care tips to your child’s abilities and may recommend Fluoride, Dental Sealants, or more frequent checkups. We’re also glad to show you brushing positions that work when your child needs extra help.

When more support is needed

For some children, treatment is safest and calmest with medication to help them relax or sleep. Depending on your child’s health and needs, we offer Sedation Dentistry and General Anesthesia in a hospital setting. Dr. Kevin Coppola is certified in sedation and hospital dentistry. We’ll talk with you about the options, and coordinate with your child’s physicians when needed, before anything is scheduled.

Questions families ask

Will I be with my child in the treatment room?

Yes, and we encourage it. You know your child better than anyone, and your presence often helps.

Do you see teens and young adults with special needs?

We care for children and teens. Ask our team about your child’s age and needs, and we’ll help you plan care.

My child has never let anyone look in their mouth. Where do we start?

Start with a conversation. We’ll plan a short, low-pressure first visit, and build from there at your child’s pace. Progress counts, even if it’s just sitting in the chair the first time.

Will my insurance cover care for my child with special needs?

Many PPO dental plans cover preventive visits like checkups and cleanings. Coverage for sedation or hospital care varies, so our team will help you check your benefits ahead of time.
