Restorative Dentistry

Repairing cavities and damaged teeth.

A cavity, a chipped front tooth or a sore molar doesn’t have to become a big ordeal. Our pediatric dentists in San Antonio repair children’s teeth with care planned around small mouths, growing jaws and the way kids actually feel in the dental chair. Most repairs are finished in one visit, and you’re welcome to stay beside your child while we work.

Why fix baby teeth that will fall out anyway?

It’s one of the most common questions parents ask, and a fair one. Baby teeth do far more than fill a smile. They let your child chew a balanced diet, help shape clear speech, and act as placeholders that guide adult teeth into position. Some back baby teeth stay in until age 10 to 12, so a cavity left alone can mean years of discomfort or infection. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends treating decay in primary teeth for exactly these reasons.

Restorative services for kids

Each treatment below has its own page with more detail:

  • Fillings: tooth-colored material that repairs a cavity and blends in with the natural tooth.
  • Dental Bonding: a quick, shaded repair for chips and small breaks, often on front teeth.
  • Dental Crowns: full coverage for a tooth too damaged for a filling, including Stainless Steel Crowns for strength and Esthetic Crowns for a white, natural look.
  • Pulp Therapy: treatment for a tooth whose nerve is affected by deep decay, so the tooth can be kept.
  • Tooth Extractions: removal when a tooth can’t be saved or is blocking an adult tooth.
  • Space Maintainers: small appliances that hold room open after a baby tooth is lost early.

Catching problems early keeps treatment smaller. Regular Exams & Cleanings and Digital X-Rays help us spot decay while it’s still minor, and some very early cavities can be managed without a filling at all through Curodont™ Repair or Silver Diamine Fluoride.

How we keep treatment calm

Pediatric dentists complete at least two extra years of specialty residency after dental school, much of it spent learning how to treat children who are young, wiggly or nervous. Several dentists on our team are also board-certified in pediatric dentistry.

Before we begin, we talk with you about what we found, the options that fit, and why we recommend one over another. With your child, we use simple, friendly words: we “put the tooth to sleep” and “wash away the sugar bugs.” Local Anesthesia numbs the area, and for children who need extra help relaxing we offer Nitrous Oxide, Sedation Dentistry and, when appropriate, General Anesthesia.

Planning treatment with your insurance in mind

Families with PPO dental plans often want to know how restorative care fits their benefits. Our front-office team can help you review your plan before treatment so there are fewer surprises. Coverage varies from plan to plan, so we’ll walk through your specific benefits rather than guess.

Do baby teeth really need fillings?

Usually, yes. Decay in a baby tooth can spread, cause pain or infection, and affect the adult tooth developing underneath. Your child’s dentist will look at how long the tooth has left and recommend the simplest repair that protects it.

Can my child have more than one tooth fixed at a visit?

Often. When several teeth need care, we can usually group them on the same side of the mouth to cut down on the number of appointments. We’ll suggest a plan that matches your child’s age and comfort level.

Will my child be awake during treatment?

Most children are awake and relaxed with numbing alone or with laughing gas. For a child who is very young, very anxious or needs a lot of work, we’ll talk with you about sedation or general anesthesia options.

Does restorative dentistry for kids use metal?

It depends on the tooth. We offer tooth-colored fillings, white crowns and stainless steel crowns, and we’ll explain the trade-offs so you can choose what fits your child.
