Teenagers still benefit from a specialist. Pediatric dental training covers adolescents as well as toddlers, and our dentists see teens across San Antonio for checkups, sports guards, wisdom teeth and aligners. We talk with your teen directly and keep you informed.
Why see a pediatric dentist as a teenager?
Pediatric dentists complete at least two more years of residency after dental school, and that training includes the adolescent years. The teen mouth is still changing: the last baby teeth fall out, the second molars arrive around age twelve, and wisdom teeth begin to form. A dentist who has followed your child for years can spot changes early and compare them with what came before.
Teens also start taking charge of their own health. We treat them as partners, explain what we see, and give them the reasons behind our advice, so good habits feel like their choice.
What we watch for in the teen years
- New permanent molars: sealants help protect the deep grooves of molars soon after they erupt. See Dental Sealants.
- Wisdom teeth: we monitor how they’re developing with Digital X-Rays and refer to an oral surgeon if they need to be removed.
- Sports: a well-fitted mouth guard lowers the risk of a broken or knocked-out tooth. See Mouth Guards.
- Drinks: sports drinks, energy drinks, sodas, and sweet coffee drinks can wear down enamel quickly when sipped through the day.
- Grinding: stress and growth can bring on nighttime clenching. See Night Guards.
- Alignment: crooked or crowded teeth can often be straightened without traditional braces using Invisalign®.
Checkups that fit a teen’s schedule
Regular Exams & Cleanings remain the best way to catch small problems while they’re easy to fix. Many PPO dental plans cover preventive care like checkups, cleanings, and sealants, and our front office team can help you check your benefits. With five offices in the San Antonio area, it’s often possible to find a time and place that works around school, practice, and work.
When does my teen move to a general dentist?
There’s no single right age. We’ll talk with you and your teen about timing as they finish high school, and we’re happy to help with the handoff when the time comes.
Is my teenager too old for a pediatric dentist?
No. Pediatric dentistry covers kids until adulthood, and many teens appreciate staying with a team they already know.
Do teenagers still need sealants?
Often, yes. Second molars usually come in around age twelve, and sealing their grooves soon after can help keep cavities away.
Can my teen get Invisalign instead of braces?
Many teens are good candidates for clear aligners. We’ll look at your teen’s bite and talk through whether Invisalign® fits their needs.
How often should a teenager see the dentist?
Most teens do well with a checkup every six months, though we may suggest a different schedule based on your teen’s cavity risk and needs.
