A dental laser lets us treat the gums and other soft tissue in your child’s mouth with a focused beam of light instead of a scalpel. As pediatric dentists in San Antonio, we use laser dentistry because it fits what children need: short treatment time, very little bleeding, and an easier recovery. Many parents first hear about our laser when their baby needs a tongue-tie or lip-tie release.
What is laser dentistry used for in children?
Our most common laser treatment is releasing a tight tongue or lip, a procedure called a frenectomy. Our Laser Frenectomies page covers it in detail.
The laser can also be used for other soft-tissue care in the mouth.
Why we use a CO2 dental laser
We use a Deka CO2 dental laser. For children and parents, its advantages are practical:
- Precise treatment. The laser works on a very small area, so the surrounding tissue is left alone.
- Less bleeding. The laser seals small blood vessels as it works.
- Shorter procedures. Less time in the chair matters for young children.
- Often no stitches. Most laser procedures heal without sutures, so there’s nothing to remove later.
- Smooth healing. Most children are back to their usual routine quickly.
What to expect during a laser procedure
Before we begin, we explain the plan to you, and to your child in words that make sense for their age. Your child wears protective glasses, which many kids think look pretty cool. The laser itself is quiet, and most soft-tissue procedures take only a few minutes. Depending on the treatment and your child’s needs, we may numb the area first or offer Nitrous Oxide to help your child relax.
You’re welcome to stay with your child, and we’ll tell you what we’re doing as we go.
Caring for your child afterward
Healing after laser treatment is usually simple. The treated spot may look white or yellowish for several days as it heals; that’s normal. Soft, cool foods are a good idea for the first day or so. If we treated a tongue or lip tie, we’ll show you stretches to do at home so the tissue heals with free movement. Call us if you see bleeding that doesn’t stop with gentle pressure, a fever, or anything that worries you.
Laser dentistry FAQs
Is a dental laser safe for kids?
Yes. Dental lasers are widely used in pediatric dentistry, and our team is trained in using ours. Everyone in the room, including your child, wears protective eyewear during treatment.
Is laser treatment uncomfortable?
Most children feel very little. The laser keeps bleeding to a minimum, and when needed, we numb the area so your child stays comfortable.
